The Department of Zoology was established in 1986 and was upgraded to the 6 units level (Entire Zoology) at T.Y.B.Sc. in 1991-92. The department has well qualified staff with 03 of them possessing Ph.D degrees. 02 with M.Phil. The teaching staff is dynamic and works hard both in teaching as well as in research. One of them is recognized as a research guide by Periyar University and has received award like ‘Bharat Shiksha Ratna’ by Global Society for health & Educational growth New Delhi. Faculty members are active as members of the academic council of Goa University and other academic bodies like members of BOS, Advisory committee under UGC SAP programmes. The department has undertaken major research projects and minor research projects sponsored by DST & E UGC, ICSS, New Delhi. The research findings has been published and presented at various seminars, symposia conferences,. The department has also organized several state level seminars, regional seminars, workshops etc. At present one research project is in progress.
Zoology study forum of the department is an instrument through which the different activities like talks, and presentations by eminent personalities, workshops, seminars are arranged. The performances of our students at the T.Y. level-Goa University examination have always been very encouraging and fruitful. Many of them stood first in the subject in the Goa University Examination. Some of them also topped in the PG level (Zoology) examination at Goa University.
The Zoology graduates passed out from our portals are all employed in prime locations as doctors, managers, paramedical officers, pathologists, entrepreneurs, small scale industrialists besides college lecturers and school teachers. Many of them are also employed in different government, paragovernmental and private organizations. Some of them taken their doctorate in the subject of interest and moved to serve in the different research fields. The option for the zoology graduates for P.G. learning are many besides Zoology, namely, Fisheries, Dairy technology and Farming, Biotechnology, Genetics, Environmental study, Biosciences, Bioinformations, Biodiversity, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Entomology, Life science besides PGDMLT and other paramedical courses. At the undergraduate course, as a part of the curriculum, students have a paper in Animal Biotechnology and its application. So as a part of it students have hands on training in Animal Cell Culture techniques. The department has two major and one minor laboratory for simultaneously carrying our practicals. It has progressed considerably through the addition of new books & different equipments.
