The Department of Chemistry was established in 1986. Initially it offered Three units Chemistry along with Microbiology and Six units in Chemistry at third year. In 1999 Industrial Chemistry was introduced as Vocational course sponsored by UGC and later on by Government of Goa. Last few years Department of Chemistry offers courses in 6 units Chemistry and 3 units of Chemistry and industrial chemistry at the T.Y.B.Sc. The uniqueness of the Industrial Chemistry subject is the compulsory on job training of 60 days during the three years of B.Sc. Course. Almost 40%-45% of our students pursue higher studies and 4 students have cleared NET and 3 are doing Ph.D. Majority of the Chemistry students are immediately employed either through placement cell or otherwise. Some of our students are occupying position as Scientists in Research Organization and Industries. Several of them as Production and Quality Control Officers, Managers, Teachers in Schools, Higher Secondary's as well as in Colleges.
There are 13 regular faculties ,out of which 2 are M.Phil. and 8 are PhD. qualified and few visiting faculties who are engaged in teaching learning process of the department for the two programmes. Apart from regular teaching learning process most of the faculties are also involved in research work. The department have completed 8 research projects funded by funding agencies like UGC, DST,etc. Teachers have published several papers in peer reviewed national and international journals. Also several papers were presented in national and international conferences. Some of them winning awards for the papers. Faculty members have been appointed as member of BOS in Chemistry and other interdisciplinary subjects by Goa University, as well as on State boards/Statutory bodies as members. The department organized one national seminar sponsored by UGC and 4 state seminars/convention in last few years.
